Root Change is a pioneering, six-month old non-profit with a lofty goal – to find ‘game-changing’ social enterprises that will alter the course of an international development industry out of step with the times. Funders and social investors today are looking for ways to generate social impact as well as a return on investment. Root Change has developed a way to connect this capital with the most promising small and growing businesses in the developing world. Our international network of Innovation Scouts is trained to identify innovative ideas locally and then to feed the most promising models into our virtual Idea Marketplace. This online marketplace will allow those interested in supporting social enterprises to trade in the value of these small and growing businesses, using virtual money to drive up the stock of exciting new ideas and lowering stock prices when the information is less impressive. This virtual trading will both provide critical feedback to these new businesses and open a forum for funders to locate and invest in enterprises that meet their goals. By relying on competition and feedback to determine what works, Root Change is creating a new model for innovation and poverty alleviation in the developing world.
