Background and Rational

In response to the need of Knowledge Management (KM) for Organizational Capacity in order to better impact public policy, several initiatives have been launched to build organizational capacity in Knowledge Management for development.  Since June 2006 the Global Development Network, World Bank Institute, African Capacity Building Foundation, Development Bank of Southern Africa, Busoga Rural Open Source and Development Initiative, and Centre d’Analyse des Politiques Economiques have partnered together to deliver KM workshops and conferences for representative of research institutes, NGOs, and universities in Africa.  GDN, WBI, and CIPPEC are now launching a similar program in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

Objectives

The objectives of the brainstorming session are relatively simple:
  • to convene stakeholders interested in building the KM capacity of organizations in LAC
  • to contribute ideas on the design and content of future KM workshops (which can be used for activities sponsored by any organization)
  • to identify organizations that will be actively involved in delivering these workshops
  • to set up the foundations of a Latin American network of CSOs interested in KM

Participants
About 20 participants will be invited.  They will posses familiarity of KM concepts, practices, and needs of the region and represent a diverse group of organizations, including NGOs, knowledge networks, research institutes, government agencies, and donors. Participants will represent different Latin American subregions, and will be gender balanced.

Design
The brainstorming session will involve group discussions and work in small groups.  It will be highly interactive.  It will also include time to both reflect on the issues at hand and informal group activities.

Output
The final result will be a road map/template/program of the first workshop with main topics elaborated, pedagogical approaches selected, and organizations that will participate and make presentations identified.  All content produced will be publicly available to any interested parties, it will be available in both English and in Spanish.  A related output will be the creation of a small LAC network of KM experts who are willing to collaborate on future activities regardless of who delivers them.
